Wood Engravings of Traditional Devotional Art
SDG Image Gallery
This is our gallery of "laser ready" line art images used to make stock, custom, and specialty items. If you see an image or part of an image you like, we can readily create a finished etching in a variety of sizes and finishes, or inscribed with your favorite prayer or scriptural passage.
This initial collection is inspired by exquisite images recovered from Benedictine archives and meticulously restored by the Corpus Christi Watershed Project - perhaps the finest on-line resource for traditional line art (www.ccwatershed.org). Considerable time is required working with each image to finally produce the vividness and detail found in our high quality laser engravings.
We are constantly developing new items to grow our collection. Please check back often. Additionally, contact us if you have an idea or an image we can develop together.
The central image depicts the Lamb of God, a title for Jesus that appears in the Gospel of John, where John the Baptist sees Jesus and exclaims, "Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world." (John 1:29). The lamb is shown bleeding from the area of the heart, symbolizing Jesus' shedding of his blood to take away the sins of the world.
"When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, “Woman, behold, your son!” Then he said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!” And from that hour the disciple took her to his own home." John 19:26-27 The inscription is from "Reproaches" or the Improperia, a series of antiphons and responses expressing the remonstrance of Jesus Christ with His people.
In the 1800's a French nun named Catherine Labouré had several visions of Mary. In one of these visions, she saw Mary standing on a globe with a snake (Satan) under her feet. Around the image of Mary, Catherine saw the words - "O Maria concepta sine. Peccato ora pro nobis qui ad te confugimus" or “O Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to you".
Also called the Paschal Vigil or the Great Vigil of Easter, is a service held in traditional Christian churches as the first official celebration of the Resurrection of Jesus. The Catholic Church sees the Mass or Eucharist as "the source and summit of the Christian life", to which the other sacraments are oriented. The Catholic Church believes that the Mass is exactly the same sacrifice that Jesus Christ offered on the Cross at Calvary. The term "Mass" is generally used only in the Latin Church.
The Cenacle (from Latin cenaculum), also known as the "Upper Room", is a room in Jerusalem traditionally held to be the site of The Last Supper where Christ established the Institution of the Eucharist. The word is a derivative of the Latin word cena, which means dinner. In Christian tradition, based on Acts 1:13,the "Upper Room" was not only the site of the Last Supper (i.e. the Cenacle), but the usual place where the Apostles stayed in Jerusalem.
Gethsemane (meaning "oil press") is a garden at the foot of the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem. It is the place where Jesus prayed, his disciples slept, and Judas led the mob to arrest Christ the night before his crucifixion.
